23. The Angel

Chapter Synopsis

Bella is drifting into unconsciousness and feels a sharp pain in her hand. She believes she is dead because she hears more snarling and then the voice of an angel, speaking to her. She hears a fight going on. Then we discover it is Edward’s voice she is hearing, sobbing tearless, broken sobs. Bella is trying to tell him he shouldn’t cry and that it’s okay — but her voice does not sound. Her lips are missing or something.

She realizes she’s in a lot of pain, and then hears Carlizzle state she’s lost a lot of blood. Over all the pain, she feels the burning in her hand and tells Edward. Carlizzle the doctor finally sees that James bit her, and is appalled. Alice and Carlizzle tell Edward he has to suck the venom out of Bella, but Edward doesn’t know if he can do it without sucking her dry.

Bella keeps calling for Edward, trying to see him through the blood in her eyes while Carlizzle plays Dr. MacGuyver and splints her leg and bandages her boo-boos. Edward sucks out the venom and Bella feels herself slipping back into unconsciousness, but is able to ask Edward to stay with her since he didn’t eat her. (Boooooooo!)

Prior to passing out, Edward aks Bella where her mom is and Bella admits that James tricked her. Then, Bella says she smells gasoline — leading us to believe they are burning James as she lays there. Edward picks her up and tells her to sleep. Bella promptly passes out.

Best Worst Lines

“Because, through the heavy water, I heard the sound of an angel calling my name, calling me to the only heaven I wanted.” (452)   (Gag us with a barbiedoll, like, kay!?)

“‘Carlisle!’ the angel called, agony in his perfect voice. ‘Bella, Bella, no, oh please, no, no!’ And the angel was sobbing, tearless, broken sobs.” (453)

“Yes, I wanted to say. Anything. But I couldn’t find my lips.” (453)

“The angel shouldn’t weep, it was wrong.” (453)

“‘Her blood tastes clean,’ Edward said quietly. ‘I can taste the morphine.’ (456)

“‘He tricked me, Edward. He watched our videos.'” (457)

“‘You can sleep, sweetheart. I’ll carry you.’ Edward soothed me.” (457)

Things That Really Irk Us

Since when is vampire venom like snake venom that you can suck out of a wound? And why, if it was going to prove too difficult for Edward to stop sucking her blood, didn’t Carlizzle (who is immune to human blood) do it?

  1. SMeyer loves blood TOO much. I hate blood… so reading these chapters… and Breaking Dawn… was terribly difficult for me… I mean really… just say she was bleeding. There is no reason for all of this description of it… vampire story or not…

Edward goes out of character by saying Sweetheart. Well… what character he does have. It’s not him. He does that by the creepy winks in the cafeteria too… stay consistant.

How the devil did blood get in her eyes? Is she getting it confused with smoke? Did Eddie play The Platters for her during their car rides? Haha… really terribly referrance to an old band.

  2. … you have a really good point. I didn’t even think about that. Carlisle is much more ‘immune’ to human blood than Edward, so it would’ve been logical–though not as ‘romantic’, apparently–for Carlisle to suck the venom out of Bella. And not Edward.

  3. Okay, I must state at this point that I laugh hysterically every time I read “Carlizzle”. On a completely unrelated note: Weren’t SMeyer’s vampires supposedly hell-bound? The how the hell(excuse my poor pun) is Edward an angel? This confuses me more than hotel-jumping a few chapters back.

  4. Oh come ON! S. Meyer is such a sissy! She ties everything with big random adjectives that most of the time don’t even fit, and has ruined the legend of vampires! An ANGEL? Bella needs to stop whining and grow a spine, Edward the freaky disco-ball stalker needs to be murdered. Thank God I have Buffy on speed dial 🙂

The “gag us with a barbiedoll” was one of the funniest comments! (Other than the “Touchdown” comment in the previous chapter!)

  5. You can get a whole different spin on certain pats of this series if you correlate them with religious imagery. Sparkle/Angel, Blood/Christ…..at least that’s the thought that occurred to me when I felt disturbed.

  6. A note to Bella–your lips should be on your face. That’s where lips usually are. Glad I could help.

    • Probably she had bitten her lips so much they came off. Check the movie – she’s literally munching on them.

  7. Last time I checked the venom goes in when you’re sucking the blood so how does it make sense to have another vampire suck out vampire venom?

    • I suppose Meyer thought that if it was in the bloodstream, it could be sucked out. Hey Stephenie! It’s not dialysis!

  8. bella, i am pretty sure your lips have been eternally damned to hell for kissing the sparkly demon adonis thing

  9. In my mind, I added a “That’s what she said!” after “He watched our videos” I have a twisted mind….
